Frequently Asked Questions

SSA QUESTIONS

What is the Science Students’ Association Council?

The Science Students’ Association Council is formed by 34 undergraduate students at the Faculty of Science working to represent YOU, the science student body. The council is composed of 15 elected representatives that serve as your advocates and voice to the faculty, the administration and UMSU, and 19 appointed councillors responsible for providing services and improving your overall experience as an undergraduate in science.

Are you guys still renting out lockers?

Fall 2023 locker rentals have not yet begun. For locker related questions, please email ssastudentservices@gmail.com

P.S. Please clear out your lockers by the end of each semester!

Can you help us in promotions or by reposting something on your Instagram?

Due to an overwhelming demand, all requests will be reviewed and posted at the discretion of our communications team. We prioritize requests from our departmental and non-departmental clubs and UMSU.

Requests may be submitted through the Communications Team email or the Executive email, as well as through Instagram or Facebook.

At this time, we do not make promos upon request.

I want to get involved in SSA. How do I go about doing that?

Selections for the 2023/24 appointed positions on SSA have already begun and the deadline for applications has passed.

However, if you identify as part of the following communities, please keep an eye out in fall for our by-election, as these elected positions are currently vacant:

Women’s representative

Indigenous representative

Accessibility representative

Sometimes SSA requires volunteers for major events (for example, fall orientation and the bisons walkathon). Please check our Instagram page which is regularly updated with any current opportunities we may have.

Elections for President, VP, Senators, UMSU Representatives, and Community Representatives happen in late February to early March, annually. Appointed councillors are then chosen by the Selections Committee in May. By-elections for unfilled elected positions are done in the Fall of the following year, when necessary.

We suggest you visit our team page to give you an overview of the council structure, then check out the by-laws.

Where can I submit a question and/or feedback to SSA?

We greatly appreciate your questions, suggestions, and feedback here. Your feedback and concerns will be brought to the Dean of Science during our monthly meetings. There is also an option for you to leave your student email address to get a direct response from one of your SSA councillors.

Students are also more than welcome to contact us by email at science.studentsassociation@umanitoba.ca

Academic/CAMPUS QUESTIONS

What are the resources available to me as in Science or as student on campus? In Winnipeg?

There are lots of resources available to students at the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba, as well as resource centres accessible around Winnipeg.

If you need to contact campus security, please call 204-474-9312 (Fort Garry) or 204-789-3330 (Bannatyne).

Where do I go for advising regarding my academic affairs?

The Science Advisors Office would be your go-to! To book an appointment today, please visit their Virtual Advising Centre.

If the matter is urgent, please call them at 204-474-8256 during business hours (Monday – Friday 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM).

Due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic situation, only the virtual Science Advising office is open.

Their office is located at 230 Machray Hall, 186 Dysart Road, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2.

Goodness it is freezing outside! Is there any other way for easier mobility around campus?

You got that right! Avoid the chills of winter and walk underground using the University’s tunnel system. The tunnels connect many of the buildings on Fort Garry campus. To and from the Science buildings is easy– connect straight to the UMSU UC or Tier (U of M Station–Winnipeg Transit).

For accessibility services, the U of M operates an accessible van to transport people with disabilities between Fort Garry campus facilities. This service is free and organized through SAS. To use this service, please contact the SAS Exam Centre at 204-474-6213.

Are there gender-neutral washrooms on campus?

Yes! Accessible, universal-design toilet rooms (UTR) and gender-inclusive (G/I) washrooms are located across UM campuses. These facilities play an important role in reducing barriers and making our campuses safe, accessible and welcoming to all.

To find the closest one to your location, use this form or this document.

I want to make sure that I am on track for graduation. Is there a way to check this?

If you still have/new questions arise after running an audit, connect with a Science advisor!

It’s exam season and the library is full! Where else can I study?

We understand the frustration! In Science, the SSA Lounge at 209E Armes, basement/tunnel study spaces, and vacant lecture rooms are just some of the places we can recommend during this time. You can also explore other faculties’ spaces and buildings for availability, but there is no guarantee. Please adhere to the current protocols on campus, when using these spaces, and please be extra respectful of other students during this time.
